To celebrate our successful collaboration following the CANstruction competition, Structures hosted a few students from Anderson High School’s Robotics Team to have a few snacks and learn what the structural engineering profession is all about. It was an after-hours event that started with a casual introduction of ourselves and evolved to a fairly thorough discussion on the relationship between structural design and architecture. Later, stations were set up to showcase the design challenges that can come up in any given project and to illustrate the importance of BIM in the design process.

Lessons were learned, laughs were had, and Doritos were consumed!

Nikki Wernli hosts a lesson in finite element analysis and plate theory…hardcore concrete design.

Tom Quintero and Shawn Yamanaka (mostly Shawn) demonstrate how the mundane, in this case a staircase, can actually pose a considerable design challenge.
