The City of San Antonio’s Police Department joined forces with the City of San Antonio’s Fire Department for the construction of the new Public Safety Building. Consolidation of the City’s Police and Fire Departments allowed co-location of the City’s Public Safety Services, the opportunity for joint operations, convenience for the public and the opportunity for shared common spaces while creating a new state-of-the-art facility.
The new Public Safety Building includes a seven-story concrete framed administration building with steel framed lobby area and mechanical penthouse. The building incorporates projectile resistant design. Adjacent is a nine story post-tensioned concrete framed garage with steel framed stairway enclosures. The administration building and garage are linked with a steel framed pedestrian bridge. The design-build delivery method was utilized to meet an aggressive schedule. Structures worked closely with the contractor, Hensel Phelps, to facilitate real time cost estimates and provide phased construction packages to help kick-off construction while design continued.
