The mission of TVMDL is to promote animal health and protect agricultural, companion animal and public health in Texas – and beyond – through excellence in veterinary diagnostic services. As part of the Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences department of Texas A&M University, the approximately 11,200 SF, one-story facility includes highly specialized spaces, such as Biosafety Level (BSL)-2 and BSL-3 laboratories and BSL-2 necropsy facilities.
The laboratories and necropsy facilities were designed with the latest technology to provide the best diagnostic capabilities. The building is also designed with flexibility to permit growth with emerging technologies.
In addition to the laboratories, the building contains support spaces for waste sterilization, glassware washing, incinerator and decontamination systems, and carcass disposal. It also features a mechanical penthouse, offices and meeting rooms, and an employee wellness/fitness center.
One particular item of note is that the specialized rooftop HVAC units utilized to support the BSL-2 and BSL-3 spaces required thoughtful consideration of the structural engineering and design elements in order to ensure that these larger, heavier HVAC units were adequately supported.
