The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is a research facility which conducts over 3,500 research projects a year. In order to support their continual research a new lab facility was required to aid researchers located in South Campus. The new multi-disciplinary research facility is a five story, 78,000 sf addition to the existing Harry S. Moss Clinical Science Building and includes animal research labs, dermatology labs and support space.
The structural system used is cast in place concrete pan joist. Square concrete columns with beams were used to create moment frames in both primary directions. The foundation for this project can be described as a concrete grid stiffened foundation supported by straight drilled shaft piers bearing onto a weathered shale formation.
