This is the first year for the structure|austin competition. structure|austin is an annual showcase recognizing structural excellence within the AEC community. Nominations are submitted for consideration and thirteen projects were in this year’s nomination list. Of these, three are chosen for recognition. We’re delighted to announce that Structures performed the structural design for one of the three chosen this year: 1111 East 11th St, the Bercy Chen Studio. The other two structures being recognized this year are the Long Center and the Austin City Hall. The Bercy Chen Studio, a mixed-use building, will be the first structure in the structure|austin tour on October 3rd at 8am. A discussion and tour of the building will begin at 8:30am.

Completed in 2008, the structure is a set of three uniquely designed levels that balancing and overlap one another, creating alternating cantilevers. Stacked Vierendeel trusses support the cantilevers while simultaneously allowing for the architecturally strategic window placement. The ground level consists of several retail shops, the upper level houses the Bercy Chen Studio, and the third level is a residential space.
